At-Home Foot Care: What Your Podiatrist Actually Recommends

Looking after your feet shouldn't stop when you leave the clinic. In fact, most of the progress we see in our patients at Southern Vales Podiatry comes from what they do at home between appointments — the products they use, the habits they build, and the small things they stay on top of day to day.

The challenge is knowing what actually works. There's no shortage of foot care products on the market, but not all of them are worth your money, and some can do more harm than good. Here's what we genuinely recommend to our patients — the same products and advice we give in clinic every day.
Dry, Cracked HeelsCracked heels are one of the most common things we see, and one of the easiest to manage at home with the right approach. The key is using a heel balm that contains urea — a naturally occurring compound that softens and hydrates thickened skin far more effectively than a standard moisturiser.

We recommend starting with a urea-based heel balm at a concentration of at least 15–25%. Apply it daily after showering when the skin is still slightly damp, and you should notice a difference within a week or two. For heels that are deeply cracked or fissured, come and see us first — sometimes a professional debridement is needed before a balm can do its work.

Orthotics and InsolesIf you've been fitted with orthotics in the clinic, you already know how much difference the right support makes. But orthotics don't last forever — the foam compresses over time and they gradually lose their corrective properties. Most prefabricated orthotics need replacing every 12–18 months depending on how much you're on your feet.

For patients who need a reliable over-the-counter orthotic between custom fittings, we often recommend Formthotics — a heat-mouldable insole that we can fit and adjust in clinic, or that you can use straight out of the box for general arch support. If you're after a firmer option, Trekker orthotics offer a more structured level of support that suits people who are on hard surfaces all day.

Compression SocksWe get asked about compression socks a lot — particularly by patients who stand for long hours, travel frequently, or deal with tired, heavy legs. Graduated compression works by applying pressure at the ankle that gradually decreases up the leg, helping blood flow back toward the heart more efficiently.

They're not just for older patients or people with medical conditions. If you're on your feet for work, training for a running event, or flying interstate, a pair of graduated compression socks can make a noticeable difference to how your legs feel at the end of the day.

Toenail CareThickened or discoloured toenails are something we treat regularly in the clinic, but ongoing care at home makes a real difference to outcomes. If your nails are difficult to cut because they've thickened, a nail softening solution applied before trimming can make the job much easier and reduce the risk of splitting or damaging the nail.

For nails affected by fungal infection, consistency is everything. Over-the-counter antifungal nail treatments can be effective, but they need to be applied daily for months — not weeks. If you're not seeing improvement after three months of consistent use, book in and we'll discuss whether a prescription option might be more appropriate.

Blisters and Skin ProtectionBlisters are almost always preventable. If you're breaking in new shoes, ramping up training, or on your feet in warm conditions, a blister prevention product applied to friction-prone areas before activity can save you a lot of discomfort.

We see a lot of patients who only think about blister prevention after the damage is done. The best approach is proactive — identify the spots where you typically blister (back of the heel, ball of the foot, between the toes) and protect them before you head out.

Toe Pain and Forefoot ProblemsConditions like bunions, hammertoes, and Morton's neuroma often benefit from simple offloading devices you can use at home. Toe separators and toe protectors can relieve pressure between the toes, and metatarsal dome pads placed just behind the ball of the foot can redistribute pressure away from painful areas.

These aren't a substitute for a proper assessment — but they can make a meaningful difference to daily comfort while you're working through a treatment plan.

Sweaty Feet and OdourFoot odour is more common than most people think, and it's almost always manageable. The cause is bacteria breaking down sweat on the skin, so the goal is to reduce moisture and control bacterial growth. An anti-perspirant foot cream or powder applied daily can significantly reduce sweating, and rotating between two pairs of shoes so each pair has 24 hours to dry out makes a bigger difference than most people expect.

If you're unsure which product suits your situation, the best approach is always to ask us at your next appointment. We're happy to point you in the right direction.

If you're experiencing foot pain or have concerns about your foot health, book an appointment with our team at Southern Vales Podiatry in McLaren Vale or Aldinga.
